Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to Al Gore!
Gore served as vice president under Bill Clinton for eight years then ran for president in 2000. He won the majority of votes, but not the majority of electoral votes, leading to the presidency of George W. Bush, one of the most turbulent and controversial two-term presidencies in American history. In 2006, half-way through Bush's second term, he went on to create An Inconvenient Truth, the catalyst of the environmental movement in the 21st century. Republican or Democrat, love him or hate him, you've got to admit, he is the father of modern environmentalism. Happy birthday!

EARTH HOUR!

Today at 8:30 PM (local time - wherever you are) turn off your lights for one hour. Today is Earth Hour. Some say Earth Hour makes no impact because, obviously, it's only for one hour. But its significance lies more in its breadth than its effect. Earth Hour is supported around the world - in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Israel, India, China, Poland, France and many more countries. Go invite some friends over, brew some green tea, light some candles, sit in a circle and sing Kum Ba Ya.
(Althought it does make a nice effect, we do not recommend that you light your candles outside: only you can prevent forest fires.)

Eco-Tip 3

Every week we'll post another easy tip to help you be environmentally friendly.

Eco-Tip 3
Print on both sides of the paper! If your printer can print on both sides (look in the properties - finishing menu for this, usually) make use of it. The benefits are many: you don't need to replace paper as often, your assignment is half as heavy, it's twice as hard to lose and it cuts down your consumption of paper by 50%! This might just be the easiest and most effective tip ever. If your printer doesn't print on both sides, you can print the odd pages, replace them into the printer and print the even pages (it will take a few runs to see what orientation makes it print properly). If/when your printer breaks, you should definitely buy one that lets you print on both sides. Even if it's slightly more expensive, remember, you'll save half the money you used to spend on paper.

Eco-Tip 2

Every month we'll post another easy tip to help you be environmentally friendly.

Eco-Tip 2
Take the bus! A lot of us are 17 or older and can now drive to school without a parent. Yes, it is very cool and very fun, but no matter where you are in Union County, regardless of whether your car is super fuel efficient or hybrid or electric or even runs on hydrogen (the last of which is extremely unlikely), it ALWAYS makes less of an impact on the environment to simply take the nearest bus. (Not to mention it's a hassle to get permission to park on campus).
